Latest Ofsted Inspection - May 2009

Over the past three years, the staff, pupils (with parents’ support) and Governors have worked hard to improve standards in Maths, enrich the curriculum and improve the behaviour of the pupils following the OFSTED inspection in 2006.  This hard work has been reflected in the latest OFSTED report.

Overall the school has been graded as Satisfactory with many elements of Good, most notably in the work of the Foundation Stage and the care and well being of the pupils.  The enjoyment and safety felt by the pupils and the confidence of the parents in the school was also very positively reported.  We are, of course, delighted with these acknowledgements. We were also pleased with the informal but positive and helpful verbal feedback we received during the day.

The areas identified for improvement had already been identified by the school, as noted in the report.  These are: the development of writing, matching activities to learners’ needs, to further develop our use of target work and to improve the role of Subject Leaders.  The Governors have already begun to monitor the developments in these areas and look forward to moving the school further forward over the next three years.

Extracts from the report are shown below:

As a result of high quality pastoral care and the good attention given to their welfare, pupils’ personal development and well-being are good.  Pupils’ considerable enjoyment of school is seen in their very sensible behaviour and in the above average attendance rate.  Pupils are confident in school and say that they feel very safe.  They are sure that there is an adult to whom they can turn should the need arise. The school is racially harmonious.  Pupils say that bullying and unkindness are rare and not tolerated.  Pupils know a huge amount about how to stay fit and healthy.  They respond enthusiastically to the many opportunities for sport and physical activity.

Children get off to a good start in the Reception Year.  They settle very well into school, quickly getting to know the routines and gaining in confidence.  Behaviour is very good and relationships are positive.  Children’s personal development is good because the attention to their welfare is effective.  Parents are pleased with the support their children are given when starting school, which is assisted by the good links with the pre-school provision on-site.  Strong partnerships with parents begin in Reception.

Children make good progress.  Standards at the end of Reception are rising and are now above average across all areas of learning.  Staff have high expectations of children.
